GMT Home Designs Wins 2017 NARI Award for High-End Kitchen Remodel

The 2017 EM NARI "Contractor of the Year" Awards was another great night for GMT Home Designs.

GMT Home Designs is proud to announce that NARI recognized with the Silver Award in the category of Residential Kitchen, project size over $150,000.

EM NARI, the Eastern Massachusetts National Association of the Remodeling Industry, bases judging on criteria including:

  • how well the project met the client’s needs and enhanced the functionality and aesthetics of the space,
  • innovative uses of materials and methods,
  • the ability to overcome obstacles creatively,
  • and overall craftsmanship.

Each entry is judged by a panel of eight independent experts.

This project was a special pleasure, working with repeat customers—a family of five—to update their kitchen to better match their lifestyle and the rest of the home, which was built in 1925 but updated in all other areas. This family uses the kitchen not only for meals, but as a command center and homework space for daily life. The client's requests included more light, storage, and space; better traffic flow in the food preparation area and throughout the kitchen; and a beautiful sink overlooking the backyard.

Also, the kitchen need some 'warming up' as it is located directly over the garage, making it the coldest area of the house, heated only by a radiator.

To meet all these needs, the project started with some structural modifications, including a recessed steel support beam and extension of the garage and foundation. This allowed for an extended kitchen space featuring a nine-foot bay window, providing the backyard view and lots of natural light.

A new porcelain tile floor includes electric radiant heat. Custom cabinets, quartz countertops, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and a Jenn-Air warming drawer and speed oven give the kitchen a classic look with modern amenities. The crown throughout the room unifies the spaces and makes the kitchen look like it's always been there.

Unique finishes such as the hand painted ceramic tile, crystal knobs and solid walnut island add character and personalize this family space.

The cabinet design provides tons of storage including an appliance garage, desk work station and a chalk board-faced cabinet for notes and shopping lists. Now the room truly works as the hub for family life.
